Plio‐Pleistocene mammals from Mille‐Logya, Ethiopia, and the post‐Hadar faunal change

چکیده

We describe the non-primate mammalian fauna from late Pliocene to earliest Pleistocene deposits of Mille-Logya in Lower Awash Valley, Ethiopia, dated c. 2.9–2.4 Ma, and divided into three successive units: Gafura, Seraitu, Uraitele. identify 41 taxa (including rodents), most diverse group being Bovidae, with 17 taxa. While Gafura assemblage still resembles those earlier Hadar Formation, younger Seraitu documents a major turnover. there is little change species present across this interval, relative abundances various dramatically, suids largely replaced by open-country bovids (Alcelaphini Antilopini). interpret faunal as reflective an environmental shift, contemporaneous replacement Australopithecus afarensis Homo area.

Sampling and Faunal Turnover in Early Eocene Mammals

Badgley, C. and Gingerich, P. D., 1988. Sampling and faunal turnover in Early Eocene mammals. Palaeogeogr., Palaeoclimatol., Palaeoecol., 63: 141-157. Faunal turnovers in the fossil record are episodes of synchronous appearance and disappearance of species from a community, often resulting in net change in species richness. We studied the biostratigraphic record of faunal turnover involving ear...

African climate change and faunal evolution during the Pliocene^Pleistocene

Environmental theories of African faunal evolution state that important evolutionary changes during the Pliocene^ Pleistocene interval (the last ca. 5.3 million years) were mediated by changes in African climate or shifts in climate variability. Marine sediment sequences demonstrate that subtropical African climate periodically oscillated between markedly wetter and drier conditions, paced by e...

3 Testing Models of Faunal Turnover with Neogene Mammals from Pakistan

mammalian faunas. This model is a modified form of Vrba’s turnover-pulse hypothesis, which posits that changes in the physical environment drive speciation, extinction, and local faunal turnover (Vrba 1995a). Model 2 emphasizes the dominance of species with large population sizes and large geographic ranges through intervals of environmental change. This model arises from the literature about m...

Projected climate-induced faunal change in the Western Hemisphere.

Climate change is predicted to be one of the greatest drivers of ecological change in the coming century. Increases in temperature over the last century have clearly been linked to shifts in species distributions. Given the magnitude of projected future climatic changes, we can expect even larger range shifts in the coming century. These changes will, in turn, alter ecological communities and t...

Wildlife in Ethiopia: Endemic Large Mammals

This study documented species riches of endemic large mammals and their biogeography, conservation status and threats in Ethiopia. Overall there are 280 mammalian species and subspecies 31 are endemic. Out of this, 12 of them are endemic large mammals, namely Canis simensis, Theropithecus gelada gelada, Theropithecus gelada obscurus, Capra walie, Capra ibex, Capra nubiana, Eurus assinus african...
